Wally: Hey, Beav’, what’s this stuff all over the floor?! And what’s takin’ you so long? I thought you said you knew how to measure the relative humidity of the floor!

Beaver: Gosh, Wally. I’m doin’ what Eddie Haskell taught me… sealing plastic humidity chambers over cans of desiccant throughout the floor. After moisture gets trapped under here for a couple days, we’ll compare the difference in desiccant weight before and after. By next week, we’ll know if it’s safe to install the Florock epoxy flooring the customer wants. Unless, like Eddie says, we need to test again…

Wally: Man, Beav’, didn’t I tell you to stay away from that guy?! He manages to get me in trouble even when he’s not around. Where’s that Rapid RH kit?

Beaver: Gee, Wally, are you talking about external reusable probes? We tried that on Eddie’s job, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Dragging the test meter cables around a big floor is a mess. Plus, Eddie says the required calibration on those probes is expensive and buying new ones costs even more!

Wally: Look, Beaver, everything you’re talking about is outdated. It figures ol’ Eddie Haskell wouldn’t know about the latest technology! Last month welcomed the newest member of the FloroCrete concrete floor finishes family, FloroCrete HD! Amid the excitement, customers expressed the need for a summary of the various FloroCrete Urethane Mortar products. We’re glad to oblige!

As you may know, FloroCrete products offer properties far superior to typical epoxy flooring. They protect against thermal shock, as well as provide exceptional resistance to chemicals, solvents, acids and bases. In addition, all FloroCrete systems meet USDA requirements for incidental food contact and can be installed with any level of skid-resistance. Here’s the current line-up:

Jethro applied for a mechanic’s position at Big Floors, Inc., a loyal FLOROCK customer. Another guy applied for the same job. Both applicants, having similar concrete floor finishes qualifications, were asked to take an epoxy flooring test by the Owner of the company. Upon completing the test, each had missed only one of the questions.

The Owner of Big Floors told Jethro: "Thank you for your interest, but we've decided to give the job to the other guy."

Jethro: "Why would you do that? We both got nine questions correct. I should get the job. I know all about FLOROCK – I’ve even installed their newest product, FloroCrete HD!"

No doubt about it – being a Plant Manager can be stressful! Take Matt K., for example. He’s under doctor’s orders to watch his blood pressure. To learn more, let’s check in on Matt’s day…and keep track of his BP readings!

“Annual Maintenance Shutdown is coming up. Ok, what needs to be done? (BP: 80/115) Priority one – concrete floor finishes! The plant will need quarter inch resurfacing, or even more in some places… (BP: 90/125)

Large areas, severe chemical exposure, super heavy loads, lots of traffic. Plus, steam-cleaning every other shift (BP: 90/125). And government standards…the floor’s got to be in line with FDA and OSHA regs (BP: 95/130)! That means cove base in some places, sanitary, seamless and slip-resistant. Having seen the floor in our other plant, I know FloroCrete will handle these issues better than typical epoxy flooring (BP: 80/115).

However, typical hairline cracks in concrete floors that occur during minor movement or normal settling of a building can often be avoided or bridged with the use of an appropriate elastomeric flooring system. FloroSpartic Zero and FloroSpartic 340 are two of the most popular products in any FLOROCK Contractor’s arsenal. And for good reason! These high performance coatings offer excellent UV stability as well as good chemical & abrasion resistance, balanced with great tensile strength.

Yet it’s FloroSpartic’s very quick cure at room temperature that makes it stand out, enabling contractors to turn over floors faster than ever.

Naturally, rapid cure times come with shorter pot lives. The trick? Properly plan the flow of material and personnel: Mix only one FloroSpartic Kit at a time, pour the blended product onto the floor immediately and have mechanics in place, ready to squeegee and roll out the coating without delay.

What to do when the “very quick cure” of FloroSpartic Zero still feels a little “too quick”? So long as solvent is not an issue*, try adding 1 quart of 100 Solvent to each 1 gallon mix of FloroSpartic Zero. The working time will now be extended to over 30 minutes at room temperature.

Though different naming systems have been used since the 1800’s, it wasn’t until 1979 that a six year rotating list of Atlantic cyclone names was adopted — alternating between male and female international names. When the winds from such a weather system reach 39 mph, it’s labeled a “Tropical Storm” and is given its “human” name. At 75 mph, the cyclone achieves “Hurricane” designation and becomes subject to the wind speed classification (Categories 1-5) that we are all familiar with [1].

Having hit the ground running, he’s already tearing up the territory. Constantly in motion, driving to see the next concrete floor or to meet with customers about their epoxy floor coating and resurfacer needs, Bruce took a few precious moments (in the eye of the storm?) to chat. His enthusiasm was palpable as we discussed his recent career decision. Charged with improving service to existing Florock customers in the region, as well as introducing new contractors to the line, the energetic Sales Rep says he’s very pleased with his choice.

… That ”thermal shock” describes the way in which some materials are prone to damage when exposed to a sudden change in temperature? Certain materials are vulnerable to this process, in part because they do not conduct thermal energy very well. This is readily observed when a hot glass is exposed to ice water—the result is a cracked, broken, or even shattered glass.

When we expose the average epoxy floor coating to thermal shock, standard epoxy resin expands at a much greater rate than the concrete substrate. The result is the blistered, cracked and disbonded epoxy seen after such floors are steam cleaned. This is a big challenge for many industries, including food & beverage processors that must steam clean their facility floors on a regular basis!

I just installed a vinyl flake floor in my home garage and did not prime first, I just rolled on my colored basecoat, randomly broadcasted the chips and topcoated with epoxy, I am now seeing halos around the chips? what is happening???

Dear Anonymous,

It is important to wait for the epoxy to flow and begin to react before broadcasting the flakes. If the flakes go on too soon, they may begin to sink into the pigmented epoxy creating the "halo" effect around the chip edges. Also, you should prime first.

Since your garage still has a lot of stains, the job of preparation may not be complete, especially if the stains are still oily. If the stains are not oily, your best bet is to prime with a solvent based primer for better adhesion. Assuming you are not in a VOC restricted area, Florock System 3000 would do the job.
